Hockey is back. I don’t mean to sound like a crazy hockey mom because I am not. It is important for me to lead a healthy lifestyle and serve as an example for my kids. Hockey is a competitive sport that gives kids not only hockey skills but builds the character, athleticism and discipline. All things Russians grew up with. Maybe not athleticism though haha.

On Tuesday while testing and shooting this healthy blueberry breakfast smoothie for Build a Better Smoothie campaign, my 10 year old was fueling on it before the hockey try outs. He specifically asked me if I was done with a photoshoot yet so he could drink the smoothie. Made me thrilled to see my kid getting back into routine and away from summer treats. I have to admit there were a few just because it is life.

Honestly, I am still surprised how many people think cow’s milk is an essential part of a diet, especially kids’. In 10 years of parenting I never made dairy products a priority but rather have always pushed on more plant based foods. Cholesterol issues are too close to home with my grandmother and recently my mother in law both passing away from heart attacks.

When I first mixed the smoothie I was concerned about the colour. Purple and green… I wasn’t so sure. But when freshly made the smoothie comes out purple. So no worries about kids. You know the way they can be.

By the end of photoshoot smoothie turned a bit gray which I found a very trendy colour to be haha. It looks sharp. Not to mention the taste! Honestly this blueberry protein smoothie recipe is one of the best smoothie recipes I ever made. And it is so darn easy!

Because Vega One is pretty tasty on its own you don’t need to add much more to the smoothie except liquid which we decided should be Silk almond milk, blueberries for antioxidants and flavour, and oats for complex carbs to make the smoothie breakfast worthy. And last but not least. I just want to share this in case you are struggling right now with all things healthy. After living a healthy lifestyle for 5 years and finally figuring out my routine and what works for me, I get a lot of compliments.
