I edited the pictures for this blueberry protein smoothie and felt an urge to workout. Something just didn’t feel right. I had to get my day going, adrenaline rushing and endorphins flowing. Now we can talk about all things plants, protein and health.
No, this won’t be a boring talk. I promise. I will just share what is happening in iFOODreal’s household. Like real life. Very real.
Hockey is back. I don’t mean to sound like a crazy hockey mom because I am not. It is important for me to lead a healthy lifestyle and serve as an example for my kids. Hockey is a competitive sport that gives kids not only hockey skills but builds the character, athleticism and discipline. All things Russians grew up with. Maybe not athleticism though haha.
I feel that competitive sport like hockey is one of very few opportunities left for modern kids to learn that not all things in life are handed on a white plate with a blue rim. I mean there is even no grades at school anymore. So, yes, we will be pushing for representative level sports.
In order to compete one needs proper fuel. Quite obviously. We are not talking about synthetic artificially coloured drinks. No way. But rather greens, complex carbs, antioxidants, naturally occurring sugars, calcium and many other vitamins and minerals. You are looking at all of them right now.
On Tuesday while testing and shooting this healthy blueberry breakfast smoothie for Build a Better Smoothie campaign, my 10 year old was fueling on it before the hockey try outs. He specifically asked me if I was done with a photoshoot yet so he could drink the smoothie. Made me thrilled to see my kid getting back into routine and away from summer treats. I have to admit there were a few just because it is life.
Honestly this delicious blueberry breakfast smoothie makes my heart sing because it is made just with 4 simple ingredients: almond milk, protein powder with greens, oats and blueberries.
The nutritional info is simply outstanding! And all ingredients are plant based.
Vega One™ is not just a protein powder. It is all-in-one nutritional shake with greens, vitamins, minerals and probiotics. When dry Vega One has light green colour. Once mixed with water it turns bright green. That is how many greens is in it in addition to 20 gr of protein and 25% of daily recommended fiber.
Silk® almond milk makes a great base for any smoothie. It is only 30 calories per cup with no added sugar and absolutely no cholesterol. And it has as much calcium as dairy milk and is a great source of vitamin D.
Both products are non-GMO project verified.
Honestly, I am still surprised how many people think cow’s milk is an essential part of a diet, especially kids’. In 10 years of parenting I never made dairy products a priority but rather have always pushed on more plant based foods. Cholesterol issues are too close to home with my grandmother and recently my mother in law both passing away from heart attacks.
Many diseases can be avoided with a healthy lifestyle and nutrition. More often than not It is all about choices we make.
When I first mixed the smoothie I was concerned about the colour. Purple and green… I wasn’t so sure. But when freshly made the smoothie comes out purple. So no worries about kids. You know the way they can be.
By the end of photoshoot smoothie turned a bit gray which I found a very trendy colour to be haha. It looks sharp. Not to mention the taste! Honestly this blueberry protein smoothie recipe is one of the best smoothie recipes I ever made. And it is so darn easy!
Because Vega One is pretty tasty on its own you don’t need to add much more to the smoothie except liquid which we decided should be Silk almond milk, blueberries for antioxidants and flavour, and oats for complex carbs to make the smoothie breakfast worthy. No banana or vanilla. 4 ingredients and you have a healthy delicious breakfast or snack on the go. Healthy living routine made easy.
And last but not least. I just want to share this in case you are struggling right now with all things healthy. After living a healthy lifestyle for 5 years and finally figuring out my routine and what works for me, I get a lot of compliments. I realize at age of 35 and with 2 kids I could have lead a totally different lifestyle. But I made my choice and stuck to it. Now it feels like a second nature and anything outside of my comfort zone aka visiting an Irish pub, not working out and eating junk feels extremely uncomfortable and painful. I don’t even want to do it anymore.
If you have been struggling to stick with a healthy routine, get back or start by building a better smoothie. This amazing blueberry breakfast protein smoothie. I promise you will see how easy and tasty healthy eating is.
