clean eating ingredients

Since we started eating clean 4 years ago I learnt a lot about food. Mainly the difference between clean eating ingredients I ate growing up in Ukraine and today’s food in America. The findings are astonishing and the more I learn, the scarier the big picture becomes…

For example, in the US all almonds HAVE to be pasteurized and 80% of almonds are treated with PPO – a highly toxic fumigation treatment with propylene oxide, which was used as a fuel by the American Motorcycle and National Hot Rod Associations until they banned it because of its known carcinogenic risks to human beings. And propylene oxide is not listed on the Ingredients list of almonds but technically we are eating it…

Or did you know that many olive oils are diluted with cheap GMO oils? Or that all wheat in North America, including organic, has been GMO to withstand harsh winters? That’s why celiac disease…Cocoa powder for Halloween candies is harvested by kids – slaves in Africa. Perfectly smooth tomatoes are picked by workers – slaves in Mexico…Did you know that?!

I’m not saying organic is the cure for everything but we can choose the best of what is available to us, right?! Do your research and know where your food is coming from. Buy local, organic and fair trade whenever feasible. PLEASE!

Below I have added products I am using on a daily basis to feed my family real food. If you have any suggestions please feel free to leave me a comment below. Also, these links are affiliate links and if you buy a product I make a small commission without any extra cost to you. These funds help me run this blog and share recipes with you.

Food

Coconut Oil

I use it for cooking, baking, sun block and skin moisturizer.  Do not confuse heart healthy fats with saturated animal fat. Often I eat a tsp when I crave it. Look for Organic Extra Virgin Cold Pressed oil.

Great cooking oil with high smoke point unlike olive oil that becomes carcinogenic when heated. Also mild enough for baking. It is not organic but avocados are on Clean 15 list and have a thick skin thus containing very little pesticide residue.

Chia Seeds

These seeds might seem pricey but a little goes a long way. I add them to smoothies (kids never know), bars, and they make a superfood chia pudding and jam.

Hemp Hearts

High in healthy fats, hemp hearts have nutty flavour and can be added to smoothies, sprinkled on salads and oatmeal. Affordable too and Manitoba Harvest grows these organic beauties in Canada.
Flax Seeds

Similar to chia seeds but cheaper, flax seeds are full of Omega 3s. Add to smoothies and baked goods, no one will know. Flax seeds are sold both ground and whole, I prefer ground.
Raw Honey

I use it in place of sugar. Look for local organic raw honey in a glass jar that hasn’t been processed. “Regular” honey partially loses vital vitamins and nutrients during the pasteurizing process.

Maple Syrup

Not the same as Aunt Jemima. I bake A LOT with: 50% time with maple syrup and 50% with ground Medjool dates. I prefer maple syrup to honey taste wise.

Medjool Dates

Oh my, I love these dates! Meatier, softer and larger than regular dates, these are worth paying a bit more. I use them a lot in baking to keep goodies naturally sweetened. Just grind in a good blender with some liquid.

Coconut Palm Sugar

The “healthiest” of all sugars. I mean sugar is sugar but palm coconut sugar is least processed. I use it once in a while as a topping for muffins. Buy organic and fair trade, not that expensive either.

Cacao Powder

Don’t confuse with cocoa powder. Cacao is way less processed and is full of antioxidants. Simply ground cacao beans. Look for fair trade organic powder that is not harvested by kids-slaves in Africa.

Himalayan Pink Salt

Sea salt full of nutrients and trace minerals that is actually good for you. Ditch the table salt that is heated to 1000 degrees and has added chemicals.

Celtic Salt

Another great sea salt.

Molasses

I used to think molasses being a byproduct of sugar production are bad. On the contrary, unsulphured organic molasses are full of minerals and vitamins. This bottle lasts me a year. Store in a pantry.

Pure Vanilla Extract

Beware of imitation vanilla extract that is made of artificial flavourings (most of which are paper-industry by-products treated with chemicals). I also LOVE this non-alcohol version as there is no aftertaste.

Aluminum Free Baking Powder

Would you like to eat aluminum? Me neither. I’m sure it’s not good for us. FYI majority baking powders sold today are double-acting.

Cornstarch

80% of corn grown in North America is GMO. Make sure you buy organic cornstarch. I buy this big package as it’s much cheaper and lasts me for a year. Great for thickening sauces in a healthy way.

Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

Made with organic apples this vinegar is unfiltered, unheated and unpasteurized. You can’t even compare the taste to any conventional cheap counterpart. Drizzle on salad with olive oil, salt and pepper instead of a dressing. Delicious!

Raw Almonds

Raw and unsalted nuts are the healthiest. Although 80% of almonds in the US are pasteurized with propylene oxide. These almonds are steamed which is better. If you can afford buy imported organic unpasteurized almonds.

Coconut flakes

Always buy unsweetened to avoid processed sugars. Also unsulphured coconut flakes do not contain nasty preservatives.

Coconut Milk

Thai Kitchen is my favourite brand because the milk is smooth and doesn’t separate. I use it for making ice cream, curry and “icing”. There is also light coconut milk with less calories (doesn’t work for making ice cream or icing though).

Orgain Protein Powder

The best plant based protein powder I was able to find so far. Tastes great mixed just with water. It’s organic too! Choose plant based over heavily processed whey made from cow’s milk full of antibiotics and drugs.

Sunwarrior Protein Powder

This is another good plant based protein powder for cooking. It doesn’t taste as good as Orgain or VEGA when mixed with water though.

VEGA Protein Powder

If your budget allows this powder tastes amazing, even when mixed with water.

Taco Seasoning

This seasoning is organic and free of preservatives and additives usually found in most spices of this kind. I love all Frontier and Simply Organic products.

Chili Powder

Organic chili powder can get pricey if bought in small jars. I buy in bulk and use in chili, Mexican skillets and dips.

Organic Sriracha

Hot sauce made with organic ingredients and no added chemicals.

Cacao Nibs

Raw pieces of cacao beans with bitter chocolate taste and no added sugar. Rich in health-promoting flavonoids, fatty acids and minerals. Amazing sprinkled on fudge.

Liquid Aminos

Basically non-GMO and gluten free soy sauce. I use it 1:1 in place of soy sauce in all recipes.

Non-GMO Collagen

Vital Proteins collagen comes from pasture raised cows in Brazil. Great for skin, hair, nails and bones. Has 0 taste diluted in cold water.

Green Superfood

In case you have trouble reaching your daily goal of consuming greens. Just mix a scoop of this powder with water.

 Matcha Green Tea

Matcha green tea is full of antioxidants, metabolism boosting and detoxifying properties, as well as fiber and chlorophyll. 1 cup of matcha tea provides as many antioxidants as 10 cups of brewed green tea.

 Green Tea

This year I quit coffee cold turkey (just like cigarettes 4 years ago) and switched to green tea. The BEST tea to drink is organic loose leaf tea full of antioxidants and free of plastic fancy sachet and carcinogenic paper tea bags.

Beauty

Organic Body Wash – Adults

Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap contains nothing else than coconut oil/olive/ hemp oils, essential oils, water and vitamins. It is very concentrated and you have to dilute it with water. It is the purest, most organic and ecological body wash ever. I use it as a face wash as well.

Aluminum Free Deodorant – Hers

I swore of all conventional deodorants with aluminum because they have been proven to cause breast cancer. My perspiration smell is strong and I have tried many natural deodorants and Kiss My Face works the best for me.

Aluminum Free Deodorant – His

My husband swears by Every Man Jack. He loves the scent and how it works.

Fluoride Free Toothpaste – Adults

Fluoride in toothpaste swallowed during brushing contains health hazard. And it is another chemical truly unnecessary to eat. We have been using fluoride free toothpaste for 7 years now without major dental issues.

Fluoride Free Toothpaste – Kids

Tom’s toothpaste is affordable and kids like the taste. Fluoride is particularly dangerous for kids as they swallow a lot of toothpaste. Brushing regularly and my kids rarely have cavities.

Body Wash & Shampoo – Kids

Great body wash & shampoo without carcinogens like parabens, polysorbate, sodium laureth and lauryl sulfate. Affordable considering how inconsiderable kids are pumping soap.

 Organic Shampoo

Alex has no hair but I got tons. I like Avalon Organics hair products because they are affordable and do the job.

 Organic Conditioner

I like Avalon Organics hair products because they are affordable and do the job.

Skin Brush

Dry brushing your entire body helps to remove dead skin and stimulate blood circulation to keep skin youthful and glowing. I do it twice a week before shower.

 Organic Face Toner

Skin is body’s largest organ. What you put on your body, matters as much as what goes inside. Avalon Organics facial toner keeps my skin clean and fresh at affordable price.

Organic Hand & Body Lotion

Clearly I like Avalon products. This moisturizer contains no parabens, harsh sulfates or preservatives, synthetic colors or fragrances, phthalates or animal testing.

Organic Mineral Sunscreen

A sunscreen without chemicals that doesn’t leave much white residue. Works for both kids and adults. We mainly wear it during long time exposure in mid-day sun. Morning and afternoon when rays are less harmful we let skin absorb more vitamin D.

Mineral Mascara

I was quite shocked to learn that even chemicals in mascara get absorbed by your skin. I like this natural mascara because it stays on, doesn’t  create dark circles on a skin and my eyes stopped itching! I use brown colour.

Organic Lip Balm

I do not use lipstick or lip gloss but rather our entire family uses Dr. Bronner’s lip balm. It is smooth and smells nice. We use it in dry weather, before sun exposure and while skiing.

Organic Facial Moisturizer

I use coconut oil to moisturize face at night and this facial moisturizer during the day. I do not use either daily but as my skin gets dry. However, we live in a humid climate. No harmful chemicals or animal testing.

Cough Syrup – Homeopathy

I run away from pharmaceutical cough syrups because of their chemical ingredients. There are so many effective natural cough syrups! This Boron syrup has mild honey taste and helps fast.

Cough and Sore Throat Syrup – Herbs

Despite swearing not to buy food made in China, I buy this syrup made of herbs and honey. Chinese herbal medicine has a strong track record. This syrup has strong herbal taste and only 1 of my 2 kids drinks it.

Love your shop page. I know what ingredients you are using:) I am experimenting with flours, but also I would love to use no refined sugars. I use maple sugar and raw sugar often. Do you use coconut sugar or what else can I use? I just got dates so I will definitely use them in my baking:)

Hi Cindy. No I don’t, simply because Canadian Amazon sucks. If I lived in the US I totally would. 80% of my readers are in the US and that is why I link up to Amazon because those are good deals for Americans.
