Today I’m extremely proud to talk about local, sustainable and 100% organic company – Blue Moon Organics. Plus making OMG vegan creamy salad dressing (no soaking of cashews is required), which is perfect for using on salads made with any vegetables (tip – from your Organic Produce Box).:)
Blue Moon Organics is a family business delivering certified organic fruits and vegetables, certain grocery items and raw pet food. Started in 1997 by Antal and Kelly Boros, now their kids are actively involved too.
We are what we eat!
In the past few months, you probably noticed I’m posting more plant based than chicken recipes with a focus on GMO free and organic ingredients. There is a simple reason for that – we want to be healthy! In March, we switched to eating almost everything organic and cut back on animal products significantly.
Just like Blue Moon Organics family had to face life with a sick child allergic to any food, our immediate family had to face tumours and hear a scary “C” word this year. For the first time ever in the history of our family! Just like Antal and Kelly, as more we researched about what can scrutinize our health, the more terms “food” and “organic” popped up. We were well into eating healthy but not as organic. Fresh organic produce deliveries are part of our life every Thursday now.
Organic Produce Delivery Facts You Need to Know
What Is the Difference Between Organic and Conventional Produce?
Huge! To grow crops and prevent pests, organic farming relies on crop rotation, use of compost and green manure, and using other living organisms. Organic produce is grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides rather with pesticides derived from natural sources. In the past few months, you probably have heard a growing concern about health risks associated with recent WHO study concluding the most widely used synthetic pesticide in North America’s conventional farming, RoundUp (glyphosate), is “probably carcinogenic to humans”.
There seems to be a lot of confusion between Non-GMO Project Verified (butterfly, blue sky and grass logo) and certified Organic produce. They are NOT the same. Organic produce is certified organic by independent 3rd parties (the process is strict, less than 1% of farmers cheat and penalties include jail time) where as non-GMO food simply means product is not grown from a GMO seed but it does NOT mean it was raised without use of synthetic pesticides, including RoundUp.
How Does It Work?
Organic produce delivery reminds me of good old days when I heard milkmen delivered milk?! Nowadays, our life is so high tech…
Produce arrives on your doorstep in a Rubbermaid plastic bin, which keeps produce fresh and crisp for a few hours even during summer months. You do not have to be home, and you can make access arrangements if you live in a condo, no problem. Afterwards, you leave an empty bin with cheque inside on your porch the night before or early morning of your delivery day. When you come back home, fresh produce is waiting for you.
What Do I Get?
A look at last 3 winter bins I received:
I would say Regular Box, 36 litre container with 12 – 14 items, is good for a week for 2 people who eat plant based and a little bit of meat. Because it is 4 of us and my children eat A LOT of fruit, I buy extra fruit. My 4 year old eats 2 – 3 bananas per day alone.
Here is an example of the box contents from last week:
You can always check company’s website for this week’s delivery items, specials and substitutions. It is right on the homepage. Every Saturday you receive an email with next week’s delivery items and a few recipe ideas.
Can I Order More?
Yes. What I love about working with local small businesses is the customer service. You don’t have to dial 1-800 number to try to get through an automated service to order extra 10 bananas. Just call or send a quick email and you can ask for extra produce from the same person who will be delivering it for you. No miscommunication. All boxes can be built to suit your family’s needs.
How Fresh Is Produce?
As fresh as the same day. Blue Moon Organics specializes in customer service and freshness of their produce. Therefore, Antal and his family pick up all produce (nothing is delivered) themselves, so they can see and inspect the produce. That is huge considering organic produce has a shorter life than conventional. In 3 weeks of deliveries, I had no problems – all my fruits and vegetables were fresh.

Where Does Produce Come From?
Blue Moon picks local organic fruits and vegetables as much as possible. Usually from May to November almost everything in the Box is local, which I’m particularly excited about. Living in Lower Mainland, BC we have such a mild climate and I am yet to taste locally grown organic vegetables. Except from my tiny tiny garden, however using Scotts lawn fertilizer before made my cucumbers far away from organic. In winter months, most produce comes from California.
How Much It Costs?
Before you think it is too expensive for you, consider the following fact – Regular Box costs $38, which is $7 – $10 more than conventional produce. You can also order Fruit Box for the same price. I’m a strong believer in paying a bit more for my food today and saving money on prescriptions later.
Today, Blue Moon Organics has a special offer for iFOODreal readers:

Can I Make Substitutions?
Blue Moon Organics also offers unlimited substitutions. So if you do not like or don’t want a certain item, you can change your order directly on their website by 9AM the latest on the day before delivery. Also if there is a certain item you never want, just let Antal know and he will substitute it forever.:) So far, I haven’t used this option because we like all veggies and fruits.
What Is THAT In My Box and How Do I Cook That?
Listen, I understand. You might have never seen or heard of that particular vegetable before. That is fine, I have been there. Trust me, I didn’t grow up with kale, collards and leeks. My stepdad still calls kale “kyle”. Don’t be intimidated, we all learn. Just google it, ask a friend, ask Blue Moon Organics. My friends text me pictures of food with questions all the time.
As for recipes, below I will include a new Creamy Almond Salad recipe and some recipes that can be made with produce from your box. Also, think outside the box and experiment. Your dinner doesn’t have to be Scalloped Potatoes with Eggplant Parmigiana and Caprese Salad, no. I can’t tell you how more often than not I throw together everything I have on hand. That is how we grew up and that is the way it’s supposed to be. Soups, salads and casseroles are your best friends when it comes to affordable, easy and healthy eating. Also search under Mains category on my blog – lots of veggies.
How Often Do You Deliver?
Weekly or bi-weekly, all year round.
What Are Delivery Areas?
Blue Moon Organics delivers to Anmore, Burnaby, Belcarra, Coquitlam, Langley, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Pitt Meadows, New Westminster, Maple Ridge, Mission and East Surrey.
What About Pet Food?
If I had a pet again, I would never ever feed him/her dry food. We lost a cat at 9 years of age due to a kidney disease. In Ukraine, homeless cats and dogs were everywhere, just like deers and bunnies in Canada. They lived forever, like 20 years. Our cats might have lost teeth due to old age but we never took a single cat to see a vet in 20 years. And we had 8 of them. Vets were there for fixing broken bones and not for treating diabetes and cancer. Your furry family members are not more different than you. Eating dried food is like eating McDonald’s every meal. How gross?! No wonder so many pets die of cancer these days.
Boros family includes two dogs, so they know firsthand the importance of pet nutrition. Blue Moon Organics offers 2 different kinds of Pet Food: raw meat + fruit and vegetable, and kipple – salmon and potato based, very easy to digest food with wild salmon and grain free. All human grade ingredients.
Why Use Blue Moon Organics Services?
Last but not least, my thoughts to answer the “Why?” question:
- Produce is delivered right to your door – Many times I found certain organic produce shelves empty. I ended up going to a few stores at a time to find basic organic vegetables. You save a lot of time and money by getting groceries delivered, especially if you work full-time.
- Get to taste local organic produce – In my area, obviously organic produce is grown but I can never find those farms. They simply do not have a farm stand. Eating seasonal, local and organic fruits and vegetables is as healthy as it gets.
- Support local business – you vote and change North America’s food system with your fork and every $ you spend on food. Every time we buy organic produce we let a sustainable farmer know “We want your product. Grow more. We want to be healthy!”. With each and every $ we vote against GMOs and unknown side effects of synthetic pesticides, particularly the most disturbing for our health and ecosystem – RoundUp. So let’s support sustainable organic farming!
Creamy Almond Salad Recipe
Oh my, this creamy vegan salad dressing is to die for!!! I came up with it on Sunday afternoon after a family hike in the woods while looking what to make for dinner. I had many leftover vegetables and cooked quinoa perfect for a “throw-everything-together” soup or salad. I honestly hate making Sunday dinners because I’m so exhausted from cooking all week but unfortunately no one else can cook in this house…
The secret ingredient is nutritional yeast. My goodness, the best invention of the whole vegan world, I swear! It adds so much flavour and cheesiness to anything, even my kids eat it.
I also used almonds instead of cashews for a creamy dressing base and it worked like a charm. Soak almonds in hot boiling water for 20 minutes and cream away! 10 days later this dressing is still fresh in my fridge. I’m going to transform it into Ranch dip for all veggie dipping this summer and share soon. Enjoy and be healthy!
- 4 cups kale, ribs removed and chopped
- 2 cups quinoa, cooked
- 1/2 long English cucumber, sliced
- 2 medium tomatoes, sliced
- 3 medium carrots, grated
- 1/4 cup dill/parsley/basil etc., finely chopped
- 1 cup almonds, whole
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
- 1 small garlic clove
- 1/2 lemon, juice of
- 1 tsp salt
- In a medium bowl, add almonds, cover with boiling water and let stand for 20 minutes. Drain and rinse a few times. Transfer to a small food processora small food processor or blender with remaining Dressing ingredients and process until smooth.
- Add Salad ingredients to a large bowl. Pour dressing on top and toss gently. Serve with anything you like, this salad is really versatile.
*Use any veggies and grains you like. Great for cleaning out vegetable drawers and using known and unknown Organic Produce Delivery Box items.
