It is finally HOT here on the West Coast so last week we went to see a puppet show in the park. The entire time I had 6 eyes staring at me “Where are we?!”. As soon as boys polished off dinner and Alex started making fun of foxy loxy I knew it was time to go home. I am not sure I should bring up a music on the wharf even… Seriously, what is up with men, of all ages?!
Another reason I love summer heat is because I can drink a smoothie or shake in place of a meal and feel refreshed, light and not hungry at same time. Overall, our summer schedule has been fantastic so far – breakfast at 10 AM, lunch at 3 PM, self serve dinner. I love it! Less pressure on me cooking. Definitely not the lifestyle we can pull off in winter.
Summer is the time when you have to take advantage of seasonal produce and “stock up” on vitamins, as my mom loved to say. In Ukraine, August is officially watermelon season and you can’t buy it any other time. I remember literally stuffing myself all month long with dad not letting me eat it before bedtime, for obvious reasons. I have been nurturing the same love for cold crispy watermelon among my boys.
My latest smoothie obsession is this watermelon protein smoothie which packs more nutrition than the majority of breakfasts. It is made with your choice of protein, lime, ginger, coconut oil, watermelon chunks, goji berries and ice cubes. APF filtered water ice cubes that do not contain pharmaceuticals. Whaaaat?! Yes.
I recently became a proud owner of new GE Profile refrigerator with APF Water Technology.
I am a huge fan of French door refrigerators. I hope I don’t have to convince you how wonderful a bottom freezer is, right?! 2 doors is also better than 1 in this case. You can open both doors and see everything right away. Plus a French door fridge has more space. This model particularly also has an ice maker built into the door – so even MORE space.
Now, water and ice. Given that we live a clean eating lifestyle, we drink a ton of water. We also use it for cooking. Summer without ice is simply not summer when we are eating and drinking at home 95% of the time. So, you might think I am biased but I am not – I honestly can’t imagine living without a fridge with built in filtered water and ice.
You might think that all French door refrigerators are created equal but they are not. Design, features and capacity wise, it really varies.
GE’s Advanced Pharmaceutical Filtration Technology is the leading water filter in the industry, that filters a minimum of 94% of the top 5 trace pharmaceuticals for cleaner and tastier water and ice. Yes, apparently even filtered water can contain traces of progesterone and ibuprofen that may not be filtered out by municipal water treatments. By the way, did you know that you are supposed to return unused medication to a pharmacy for recycling instead of throwing it in garbage? This is so it doesn’t end up in surprise places like our water supply! I learnt that a few years ago and was honestly shocked. Makes sense though.
Other practical features of GE APF Water Technology refrigerators include a tall water dispenser to fit a large pot or a blender jug and an adjustable temperature deli drawer to free up more shelf space. Deep set LED lighting inside the fridge creates even more space. How much space do we need? When it comes to a fridge that feeds a family – a lot. Especially after a Costco haul.:)
Then, you have humidity controlled produce drawers that extend the life of your fruit and veggies. And overall, the entire fridge’s temperature is managed by ClimateKeeper for optimal temperature in the freezer compartment, therefore reducing freezer burn.
Everything is really well thought out in this GE fridge for optimal health and wellness. If I put so much effort and money into quality food, a toxin free house and lifestyle, water should not be neglected. I am really a strong believer of not drinking tap water no matter how “good” it is.
Since watermelon is 90% water, if not 100%, I added ice cubes to my watermelon protein smoothie. Now, for protein you have options as I know not everyone is crazy about protein powder. I used plant-based vanilla but whey would work too. You can also use 1/3 cup plain Greek yogurt or oats instead. Of course, with oats protein content of a smoothie will be significantly less but still nourishing.
- 1 cup ice, APF water filtered
- 4 cups watermelon, cubed
- 1 inch piece ginger
- 1 scoop vanilla protein, whey or plant-based*
- 1 lime or lemon, juice of
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 1/4 cup goji berries**
- In a high speed blender, combine all ingredients and process for 3-4 minutes or until smooth. Serve immediately.
*Replace with 1/3 cup plain Greek yogurt or oats with a bit of hemp hearts. **Use any fresh or frozen berries.
