I do use my air fryer exclusively for convenience and air fryer chocolate chip cookies is one of those recipes that just makes sense to make in the air fryer!

This recipe is based on my healthy chocolate chip cookies, but I used all-purpose flour instead. It’s still on the lighter side but with the classic taste. You can add more chocolate chips if you wish but I find them plenty sweet as is.

  • Classic taste: A bit crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside.
  • Foolproof recipe: I tested it 4 times with different bake times to nail the perfect texture.
  • No dough chilling: Air fryer dessert means no waiting, just scoop and bake right away.
  • Quick: When a cookie craving strikes, no need to preheat the oven or haul out baking sheets, just 9 minutes in the air fryer!

Ingredients for Air Fryer Chocolate Chip Cookies

You’re just 7 simple ingredients and minutes away from warm, gooey cookies!

Flour, sugar, vanilla extract, egg, baking soda, chocolate chips, butter.
  • Salted butter: I like using salted butter so I can skip the salt, but unsalted butter will work too.
  • Sugar: I used organic cane sugar, but you can easily swap in coconut sugar or brown sugar.
  • Egg: You’ll need 1 large egg to bind the dough and add richness to the cookies.
  • All-purpose flour: Makes soft, chewy and slightly crisp cookies. See variations below for whole wheat flour. If all you have is oat flour, make my oat flour chocolate chip cookies.
  • Baking essentials: Baking soda helps the cookies rise, and vanilla extract adds cozy flavor. If you’re using unsalted butter, don’t forget a pinch of salt.
  • Chocolate chips: I like to use mini chocolate chips, but you can use regular chocolate chips and choose from semi-sweet chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips, or dark chocolate chips.

How to Make Chocolate Chip Cookies in Air Fryer

Here’s a quick look at how to make air fryer cookies in a few easy steps.

Step by step process how to make chocolate chip cookies in air fryer.
  1. Cream the butter and sugar: In a large bowl, beat softened butter and sugar with a mixer until light and creamy.
  2. Make the cookie dough: Mix in the egg and vanilla, then beat in the baking soda and flour until a cookie dough forms. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  3. Prep the air fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 320 F, then place a parchment paper liner in the basket.
  4. Scoop and roll: Scoop 2 tablespoons of dough for each cookie, roll into balls and place in air fryer basket about 1.5-2 inches apart. I can usually fit 3-4 at a time.
  5. Air fry the cookies: Bake cookies for 8–9 minutes until slightly golden. Let them rest in the air fryer for 2–3 minutes before carefully transferring to a cooling rack.
  6. Repeat and enjoy: Repeat with the remaining dough and enjoy!

Air Frying Tip

All air fryers are a bit different. I tested different times and temperatures and I found 320 F to be the optimal one. And 9 minutes was a sweet spot for my air fryer too. You can bake for 10-12 minutes and see how you like them.

Tips for Best Results

Here are some handy tips to make sure your cookies turn out perfectly!

  • Let rest in the air fryer: Right after baking do not touch cookies for 2-3 minutes otherwise they fall apart. Then, transfer with spatula carefully.
  • If cookies are spreading: Chill cookie dough in the freezer for 10 minutes.
  • Don’t skip the parchment paper: Cookies will fall through and stick to the bottom.
  • Cut parchment paper to fit: The paper needs to fit the basket otherwise it will fold over from hot air circulation and deform the chocolate chips.

Variations

  • For thicker cookies: Chill the dough in the freezer for 20-30 minutes.
  • More chocolate chips: You can add up to 3/4 cup. I think 1 cup would be too much.
  • Whole wheat flour: Instead of white flour, use 1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour or spelt flour for more wholesome cookies.
  • Different mix-ins: Swap chocolate chips for chopped nuts like walnuts, pecans or almonds, dried cranberries, raisins, or chopped dates, shredded coconut, sprinkles, white chocolate chips or butterscotch chips.

How to Store

Store: If you like your cookies chewy, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. For crispier cookies, use a container with some ventilation to keep that crunch.

Freeze: Let the cookies cool completely, then place them in a resealable bag or container and freeze for up to 3 months.
