Ingredients for Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse
Only 4 simple ingredients make this an easy go-to whenever you need a sweet fix!
- Cottage cheese: You can use large curd or small curd cottage cheese that’s 0%, low-fat or full-fat. Dry curd cottage cheese works too.
- Maple syrup: I used 3 tablespoons but feel free to adjust based on your sweetness preference. Honey, agave, or date syrup could also work.
- Cacao or cocoa powder: Honestly, you can measure with your heart here to make your chocolate mousse with cottage cheese as chocolatey as you like!
- Milk: Helps everything blend together smoothly. Use dairy or non-dairy milk, whatever you prefer.
How to Make Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse
This no-bake dessert comes together in minutes with a food processor or blender.
- Rinse the cottage cheese: Place the cottage cheese in a fine mesh sieve, rinse with cold water, and drain really well.
- Combine ingredients: Add the rinsed and drained cottage cheese, maple syrup, cacao powder, and milk to your high speed blender or food processor.
- Blend until smooth: Process for 2-3 minutes, stopping a few times to scrape down the sides with a spatula. If it’s too thick to blend, add milk one tablespoon at a time until it smooths out.
- Serve: Spoon into a bowl or storage containers, then enjoy as-is or with your favorite toppings!
Tips for Best Results
These are the little tricks I use for this cottage cheese chocolate mousse recipe.
- Don’t skip rinsing: You need to get rid of the liquid the curds are packed in for a thick mousse.
- Drain it well: Cottage cheese has to be dry curds for this recipe. Excess liquid will make the mousse too runny.
- If your cottage cheese is small curd: Chances are it’s less runny. If it’s grainy, try blending it without any milk first. If it’s small curd, try to rinse or maybe just drain in a colander for a few hours.
- Adjust consistency: The thickness will vary based on your cottage cheese. I used large curd cottage cheese, so it was pretty dry. Add more or less milk based on what you’re using.
Toppings Ideas
- Fresh fruit: Seasonal fruit is always a win! I’ve been loving my mousse with strawberries and blueberries, but raspberries, cherries, mango, or even sliced peaches or banana would be amazing too.
- Chopped nuts: If you like a little crunch, throw on some almonds, walnuts, or pecans.
- Shaved dark chocolate or mini chocolate chips: More chocolate flavor is never a bad idea. Sprinkle on some flaky sea salt to make it sweet and salty.
- Peanut butter: A drizzle of peanut butter or almond butter is perfect if you’re in a peanut butter cup kind of mood.
- Healthy granola or high protein granola: Adds crunch and keeps you full. Perfect if you’re turning this into breakfast.
- Whipped cream: The easiest way to take this high protein chocolate mousse from snack to treat.

Thanks for sharing your feedback and review + star rating, I really appreciate it!
Good morning… what may we be missing nutrient-wise by rinsing and straining the cottage cheese? Thank you!
Hi Berni. It probably has some nutrients which you can discover upon quick search. I’m not too sure which ones. It is necessary for proper consistency mousse otherwise it will not be thick.
Why drain if you are just going to add milk back into the recipe?
For recipe accuracy. Because all different cottage cheese brands have different amount of liquid with curds, they all vary in consistency. You are welcome to wing it, might be watery might be not.
