Some time last month, I got bored with all my drinks, pulled out a French press and started adding everything I had on hand to make a decaf tea.

Last thing I added was turmeric, and apparently I came up with delicious anti inflammatory tea that is super popular these days. Which, by the way, didn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Ingredients for Anti Inflammatory Tea

Orange, ginger, turmeric, kettle, French Press, cutting board and knife.

Turmeric: Bright yellow root from India you can buy it fresh at a health food store or in a powder form. Turmeric contains chemical compound curcumin that acts as anti-inflammatory, pain killer and cholesterol regulator. As per this source, turmeric also has been shown to kill cancer cells, help manage depression and prevent arthritis.

Ginger: Added to tea it will help you reduce nausea. As per Healthline, ginger, like turmeric (they both come from the same family along with cardamom), has high anti-inflammatory as well as antioxidant and immune boosting properties.

Honey: I added a few tablespoons of raw honey to make turmeric tea taste good. I buy local raw honey instead of store-bought pasteurized one because its nutrients and vitamins haven’t been killed during heating pasteurization process.

Apple Cider Vinegar: As per Healthline, kills bacteria, lowers blood sugar and cholesterol, and aids with weight loss.

Orange: Optional but it adds nice flavour, more sweetness and vitamin C.

Now, that I have written out all health benefits of this anti-inflammatory tea above, I thought to myself “Wow, what a super drink!”.

How to Make Anti Inflammatory Tea

Pour boiling water over, cover and let stand for 5 minutes. Enjoy hot.

  1. Live the addition of the orange in this will try it. However, I was recently speaking to a honey expert who informed me that honey incl raw should never be mixed with boiling water as it becomes toxic. I would also question about adding the ACV in first as boiling water also kills the beneficial enzymes etc in the ACV. I would suggest waiting for it to cool a little before adding these two things.

    1. When mixed with hot water honey doesn’t become toxic but rather loses some of its nutrients and vitamins. There is also a great throat and cold drink where you mix hot water with ACV that works. I agree with you that some good properties are lost in hot water but I don’t think it is that critical. Sometimes you just wanna have a pleasant tea without taking 20 minutes to make it. I am sure some good things will still be there. If you have time you can definitely wait.

  2. Would there be an downside to drinking this tea cold? Maybe making it at night and storing it in the refrigerator for morning?

  3. the boiled hot water will definitely damage the nutrients in honey, if you want to add honey in your tea, suggest you make the tea first then add the honey when the tea temperature drop to 60c or below.

    1. Thank you so much. I suspected that. I will try that tomorrow with a meat thermometer. Just to see what 60C feels like. Also, in Ukraine we used to sip on tea while scooping small teaspoons of honey from a little saucer. That is probably the best way to enjoy tea with honey in terms of preserving nutrients. Only downside is it is easy to eat a lot of honey that way.:)

    Just made this as I’ve been having back issues, and pinched nerve as of last night (can you say PAIN!) I am drinking and praying for relief. I am taking tumeric capsules daily, and I know it has to be helping. I read prior about making ahead.. Im sure you can if you want to.drink it just to drink it, but if you are drinking it to help with inflammatory relief, FRESH is always best!!!

    1. I agree, Tricia. I hope you feel better!!! Did it help? I learnt pinched nerves take time. I hate when that happens. We slept on a futon on vacation last week and boy I still feel it. Ugh.

    I made this! I have painful osteoarthritis in my hands, knees and hip and so decided why not? It’s so pretty and sounded tasty. Well it really is! I love hot drinks in the winter and will try a cup every day. I did add a teaspoon of coconut oil, just because. It was nice way to wake up this morning. Thank-you.

    1. I love hot liquids in winter as well. Even hot water with lemon. I think you will see some relief if you drink this tea often.

  6. Do you have any suggestions on how to make this ahead of time and how to store it? Looks delicious and I could definitely use a good ginger/turmeric boost!

    1. I would place all ingredients in a glass jar with a lid, like even Mason jar, and refrigerate. Like for 3 days ahead. And then just pour hot water straight into a jar.
