How to Make Avocado Toast

Here is how to make avocado toast as simple as spreading creamy avocados onto a toasted slice of bread. One of my favorite quick meals that’s ready in 5 minutes or less.

How to mash avocado, toast the bread and make avocado toast step by step.
  • Toast bread: Slice your bread of choice and toast until golden brown.
  • Prep avocado: Cut avocado in half and remove pit. Using a spoon, scoop out the flesh and place into a bowl. Here’s a step-by-step tutorial for dicing avocados.
  • Mash avocado: Using a fork, mash the avocado to a buttery texture. Add a pinch of salt and pepper, mix, and taste. Adjust to taste keeping in mind your additional toppings.
  • Spread avocado mixture and add toppings: Divide and spread mashed avocado on each slice of bread. Add topping of choice and serve immediately.

How to Pick Ripe Avocados

For the best avocado toast recipe you’ll want an avocado that’s perfectly ripe. One that’s too firm will not mash easily and an overripe avocado is past its prime. Here are the best tips for picking a ripe avocado.

  • Check the stem: Look under the little stem ‘nub,’ to quickly tell the ripeness of your fruit. If it’s hard to pull off, the avocado is unripe. If it’s browning beneath the stem, it likely has brown spots and is overripe. If it comes off easily and is green beneath, your avocado is ready!
  • Gently squeeze: A ripe avocado should have just a little give. You don’t want one that is rock hard or gives way too easily.
  • The color: Generally an avocado is ripe when dark on the outside with just a few specks of green. Careful with this method as there are different varieties of avocado with different coloring. Underripe will be very green, and overripe are completely dark, and starting to look wrinkled.

What’s the Best Bread for Avocado Toast?

Any bread in a loaf such as artisan bread, sourdough bread or any whole grain bread, rather than square soft pre-sliced bread, is best for the avo toast.

A thick-sliced bread gives you a sturdy base that stays soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside, and pairs wonderfully with creamy avocado spread.
