Healthy Homemade Popsicles Recipe -- As bright and colourful as store bought, these 2 ingredient naturally sweetened pops won't ruin your kids health and taste delicious. | ifoodreal.com

A few weekends ago I took my kids for a walk and we were passing by neighbour’s house where kids were happily sucking onto bright green and red popsicles. The day was hot and popsicles definitely were hitting a spot. Immediately my mind started racing and it hit me – why don’t I make the same bright and sweet ice pops with fruit?! I don’t know why but I never thought of that, no idea why?! Why oh why LOL.

After we got home, I quickly went through my fruit platter and freezer. Got a few mint leaves from my herb planter. Whipped up 3 batches of cantaloupe, melon and strawberry fruit puree. Froze it in popsicle molds and voila. By 6 PM my kids were enjoying the same colourful homemade popsicles without damaging their health.

Onyx stainless steel popsicle mold shape even resembled store bought skinny Del Monte “fruit” popsicles, instead of plastic flat one. My popsicles looked like traffic lights, right?!

I love my new stainless steel mold! Main reason being that it is not plastic and no harmful chemicals are leaching into food. Especially, I always cringed when I ran plastic popsicle mold under hot water. It also takes a second to remove stainless steel mold vs. plastic and popsicles freeze much faster in it! And the bamboo sticks are reusable. Also the metal base is sturdy and steady which makes it easy to maneuver inside the freezer. Little silicone rings ensure proper stick placement, so no crooked homemade popsicles. And oh how easy it is to make or remove individual popsicles vs. in one big popsicle set. As soon as I have 2 – 3 molds free, I remake popsicles in minutes immediately.

With popsicles I also got a few other Onyx stainless steel kitchen “toys”: 2 layer double walled food storage containers (for kids’ hot lunches), 2 layer sandwich boxes (sandwich on a bottom, veggies on top), ice cube tray (for freezing leftover coffee (making Frappuccinos), and fresh herbs), a few storage containers (with a tight seal lid and surface to write on the contents with a temporary marker).

I love all of them! Quality is exceptional and more importantly my food is not touching plastic!!! Even with glass containers I have to make sure I do not overfill them to avoid food coming into contact with a plastic lid. Yes, I’m that paranoid about plastic. I can’t stand plastic touching my food! I wish I could completely avoid it but right now I do as much as I can.

Double walled containers are amazing, so is their price! If you ever tried to look for a thermos without a plastic lid inside, you know how hard it is. With Onyx containers at $14 you gotta not worry about that. They are 100% stainless steel, good size (unlike small thermos) and keep food hot for hours. You gotta pour hot water in it for a few minutes before adding hot food but that is so not a big deal. I think you gotta do it with any thermos. However, the day I made Garlic Chicken, Zucchini and Corn in the morning, it kept hot until dinner time in the double walled container (I try to avoid microwave and even didn’t pour hot water beforehand).

And about the price. I understand some Onyx items cost more but they are made (responsibly in China) of stainless steel that lasts forever! So, it is an investment and you can slowly stock up. Cheap is only “cheap” stuff, unfortunately.

Enjoy and create healthy habits for your kids now! The earlier, the better! I started my kids eating healthy young and certain foods are still a fight. Kids are kids. But I just keep going and eventually they will start liking certain foods.

As you can tell, my kids including their friends enjoyed every bit of homemade popsicles while playing outside where they are not supposed to be playing. Like good old times.:)

Healthy Homemade Popsicles

Healthy Homemade Popsicles

Ingredients

  • 4 cups fruit or berries of choice*
  • 12 large mint leaves
  • Honey or maple syrup, to taste (optional)**

Directions

  1. In a powerful blender, blend all ingredients until very smooth. Pour into 6 popsicle molds and freeze for 3 - 4 hours.
  2. To remove popsicle from the mold, hold it under hot running water for a few seconds (plastic needs more time than stainless steel to come off).
  3. Storage Instructions: Freeze for up to 3 - 4 months.

Notes

*To make 3 kinds (2 each) of popsicles, I used heaping 1 1/4 cups of 3 kinds of fruit. **You might need or not to sweeten your popsicles. Really depends on a fruit or berries and their ripeness and quality (organic fruit is more flavourful and sweeter!). I didn't add any sweetener to honeydew and cantaloupe ones but strawberry needed a touch.

How genius is this idea! I love the whole stainless steel set and would love to get one for myself. I would make a strawberry mango pop! I’m sure the flavor ideas are endless especially in the summertime. Thanks for sharing with us Olena!

Whatever the green ones are… LOL. Probably some Lime variation… not sure. The only popsicles I’ve ever had were storebought.
